The number of confirmed infections with the corona virus in the United States has risen to more than 50 million since the pandemic began. That was revealed Monday by data from Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in Baltimore. Nearly 800,000 people have died in connection with the virus so far, according to the data. Experts believe the actual number of infections in the U.S. is far higher.
About 330 million people live in the United States. The threshold of 40 million confirmed infections was crossed in early September, according to JHU. At that time, the number of deaths was still around 650,000. The Johns Hopkins website is updated regularly and usually shows a slightly higher level than the official figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC). In rare cases, however, the figures have been subsequently corrected again.
According to the CDC, 49.75 million Corona infections have been detected in the USA as of Sunday. Currently, about 120,000 new infections are reported per day, almost exclusively with the delta variant. According to the CDC, an average of about 1,100 people die each day in connection with the virus.
Experts believe that the actual number of infections in the U.S. is likely to be far higher than the 50 million now reported. The CDC agency estimates that there may have been about 147 million infections in the United States. A higher number of unreported cases is also assumed for the number of Corona deaths.
